At least 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.
A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
