Critical Role Season Four Reveals the Fighters Table
From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative showcasing angels, fiends, and dark forces increasing in influence within Dol-Makjar.
Note: Key plot points for the third episode of the new season follow below.
The Soldiers Table Introduced
The latest chapter finished on a huge suspense moment and introduced the initial group of heroes who will separate from the primary party to undertake their separate journey, apart from the additional parties.
The combat-focused team consists of the determined fighter (played by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).
The Reason for Division
Given a large ensemble, it was evident from the beginning that having everyone at the same party would be unworkable.
This explains, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Prelude, intertwining the characters’ stories before dividing into three smaller tables: Warriors, Planners, and Explorers.
The Nature of the Warrior Group
As described by the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for players who are drawn to a classically intense combat and conflict-driven narrative style where peaceful solutions are rare.
At first glance, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might look mismatched, but the events of the latest installment make it clear why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.
Why They Must Go
To begin with, the party understands precisely where to go next after a brutal initial meeting with the enemy group.
Casimir of Thjazi—whose demise kicked off the story’s plot—exploited The Crow Keepers for his own means, entering the secret base, attacking the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.
Casimir then paid off his obligations and fled to a secure base in the northern region, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.
Personal Motivations
Moreover, each adventurer has a specific drive to exit Dol-Makjar:
- Thimble, as the close ally and closest confidant, seeks retribution.
- The knowledgeable figure knows the region and warns that it is a hostile place.
- The warrior and The healer, having resisted his relatives’ demands to execute the fighter and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
- However, their reputation as important members in the influential clan could help the team access locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Moreover, Teor vowed a life debt to The cleric for his deliverance and will now follow him anywhere.
Pursued by Authorities
Lastly, all of them are wanted by the rulers that rule the city for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city no longer safe:
- Thimble and The character are known criminals.
- Tyranny and The cleric betrayed House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
- Teor is wanted dead by the clan.
This results in them few options but to travel to Timmony in pursuit of the antagonist.
What’s Next?
Based on the latest episode’s post-show segment, we find out that the combat party won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the rest of the players to round up the Questers and Strategists parties.
Fans can anticipate learning which adventurers will be where in the season’s last Overture episode, released on next week.
