Department of Justice Intervenes in Lawsuit to Block California's Congressional Map
The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
