Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability
The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
